Overview

01 · What stands out

Bright f/1.8 aperture

Lets in more light than a kit zoom, which helps indoors and blurs busy backgrounds.

02 · What stands out

S-Line optics

Nikon uses two ED and two aspherical elements plus Nano Crystal Coat in a 12-element design.

03 · What stands out

Quiet stepping motor

Internal focusing with an STM motor keeps focus quiet for video and the length fixed.

The Nikon Z 50mm f/1.8 S is Nikon's standard prime lens for the Z system, sold as the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S. A 50mm view sits close to what your eye takes in, so it suits portraits, street scenes, food, family moments and everyday video. It is a good first prime lens for anyone moving past a kit zoom who wants brighter pictures indoors and softer backgrounds.

Nikon builds the Nikon Z 50mm f/1.8 S with 12 elements in 9 groups, including two ED and two aspherical elements, plus Nano Crystal Coat and Super Integrated Coating to cut flare and ghosting. Nikon lists a 9-blade diaphragm, an f/1.8 to f/16 aperture range, a minimum focus distance of 1.32 ft (0.4 m) and 0.15x maximum magnification.

Focus is driven by a stepping motor (STM) with internal focusing, so the front does not turn or extend and autofocus stays quiet in video. Nikon says the barrel was designed with dust and drip resistance in mind. In the box Nikon lists the LC-62B front cap, LF-N1 rear cap, HB-90 bayonet hood and CL-C1 lens case, and filters use the 62mm screw thread.

The Nikon Z 50mm f/1.8 S is an FX (full-frame) prime lens that mounts directly on any Nikon Z camera, including full-frame bodies like the Z5II and Z6III. On a DX body such as the Z30 or Z50II, the 1.5x crop gives a narrower view equal to about 75mm, which works well for head-and-shoulders portraits. See every camera lens we carry.
