Guide
Which RC car or truck fits you?
Start with where it will run. A monster truck like the Traxxas Mini Maxx or the Mini XRT climbs curbs, jumps dirt piles and drives through grass. The Mini Rally VXL wears a Ford RS200 rally body and likes dirt, gravel and pavement. The Slash 4X4 Brushless is a 1/10 scale short course truck, at home on a track or a big open lot.
Mini or 1/10 scale?
Scale is size. Traxxas explains 1/10 scale as one-tenth the size of the real thing, and calls it the most common size in RC. The Slash 4X4 Brushless is 22.4 inches long and weighs 5.82 lb. Traxxas’ Mini models are about as big as a 1/16 scale truck: the Mini Maxx is 13.6 inches long and 3.62 lb, small enough for a backpack. Small does not mean slow: the Mini XRT and the Mini Rally VXL run 40+ mph on the battery in the box.
Brushed or brushless?
Every RC car on this page is brushless. Traxxas says a brushless motor has no brushes to wear down, so it is more efficient, more powerful and needs next to no upkeep. A brushed motor costs less, but its brushes wear out over time.
How fast, and is it right for a beginner?
- Mini Maxx BL-2s: 30+ mph, with the battery and a USB-C charger in the box.
- Mini Rally VXL and Mini XRT VXL-3s: 40+ mph on the included 2-cell LiPo, 55+ mph with an optional 3-cell.
- Slash 4X4 Brushless: 35+ mph on a 2-cell LiPo, 50+ mph on a 3-cell; the battery and charger are sold separately.
Traxxas rates all four Skill Level 1, its easiest: no RC experience needed. Each one has Training Mode, which cuts forward and reverse power to 50% while a new driver learns.
Which battery and charger?
The three Mini models come with a 3500 mAh 2-cell LiPo and a 2-amp USB-C charger; you add a USB-C wall adapter and four AA batteries for the transmitter. Their battery bay is 113 mm long, so full-size packs do not fit. The Slash 4X4 Brushless takes one 2-cell or 3-cell LiPo, and the Traxxas 3S LiPo completer pack (2970-3S) pairs a 5000 mAh 3-cell battery with an EZ-Peak Plus charger. See every pack in RC batteries and chargers.
Traxxas’ own rules for LiPo batteries: never leave one charging unattended, charge it in a fire-retardant container on a non-flammable surface like concrete, and unplug it from the truck after every run.
