Overview
01 · What stands out
Pancake size
About 24.7 mm long and 120 g, light enough to leave on all day.
02 · What stands out
Full frame or APS-C
28mm wide on full frame; about 45mm framing on APS-C RF bodies.
03 · What stands out
Quiet STM autofocus
Gear-type stepping motor suited to smooth video focus.
The Canon RF 28mm F2.8 STM is a flat pancake prime for EOS R series cameras. It covers full frame, so on bodies like the EOS R8 or R6 Mark II it gives a true 28mm wide-angle view for travel, street and video. On APS-C RF bodies such as the R7, R10 and R50, the 28mm F2.8 frames like a standard 45mm lens and keeps the camera small.
Canon's design uses 8 elements in 6 groups with three aspheric elements and Super Spectra Coating to reduce ghosting and flare, plus a 7-blade aperture from F2.8 to F22. A gear-type STM motor gives smooth, quiet autofocus for video and quick focusing for stills. The 28mm F2.8 focuses as close as 0.23 m (9.1 in) for up to 0.17x magnification.
The 28mm F2.8 has no optical stabilization and no dust or weather-resistant construction, and it is not compatible with RF extenders. A switch on the barrel sets the single ring to autofocus, manual focus or control ring for a setting such as aperture or ISO.
The Canon RF 28mm F2.8 STM weighs about 120 g (4.2 oz) and is only about 24.7 mm long with a 69.2 mm diameter; filters use the 55mm thread. The box includes the lens, the E-55 front cap and the RF dust cap; the EW-55 hood is sold separately. Ask us in Fullerton whether the 28mm F2.8 or a 50mm prime suits your camera. Questions
Is the Canon RF 28mm F2.8 STM full frame, and does it work on APS-C cameras?
Yes, it covers full frame. Canon also lists it for APS-C RF bodies such as the EOS R7, R10 and R50, where it gives a view similar to a 45mm lens.
Does the RF 28mm F2.8 have image stabilization?
No. The lens has no optical IS, so pair it with a body that has in-body stabilization or use a faster shutter speed.
Is the RF 28mm F2.8 STM good for video and vlogging?
Its gear-type STM motor is designed for smooth, quiet autofocus during video, and at about 120 g it keeps a camera light enough to hold at arm's length.
What filter size and hood does the RF 28mm F2.8 use?
It takes 55mm filters. The matching hood is the Canon EW-55, which is sold separately.
