Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with up to 1,053 zones and people, animal and vehicle detection.
The Canon EOS R8 puts a full-frame sensor into one of the lightest bodies in Canon's RF system, about 1 lb with battery and card. The EOS R8 suits photographers stepping up from a phone or an APS-C camera who want full-frame image quality and background blur, plus travelers and creators who carry their camera all day. This listing is the body only, so you choose the lens.
Inside the EOS R8 is a 24.2 MP full-frame CMOS sensor with the DIGIC X processor and an ISO range of 100 to 102400. Dual Pixel CMOS AF II covers the frame with up to 1,053 zones and detects people, animals and vehicles. The electronic shutter reaches up to 40 frames per second, and the electronic first-curtain mode up to 6.
Video on the EOS R8 records uncropped 4K at up to 60p, oversampled from 6K, plus Full HD at up to 180p for slow motion, with Canon Log 3 and 10-bit HDR PQ. There is no in-body stabilization in the EOS R8; for video, Movie Digital IS steadies footage, and stabilized RF lenses add optical IS for stills.
The box holds the body, the LP-E17 battery and LC-E17 charger, a strap, the body cap, battery cover and shoe cover. Add a lens and an SD card: the single slot accepts UHS-II cards. The EOS R8 mounts RF and RF-S lenses directly, and EF or EF-S lenses with the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. Ask us in Fullerton which RF lens to pair with the Canon EOS R8. Is it for you?
Good for
- A first full-frame camera that stays light enough to carry all day
- Portraits and low-light photos with fast RF primes
- Creators who want uncropped 4K 60p and high frame rate Full HD
Not the right pick if
- You need in-body stabilization for stills with unstabilized lenses
- You want two card slots or a large battery for long shoot days
What the maker made it for
- Canon presents the R8 as a light full-frame camera with RF lens access and strong stills and video features for everyday creative work.
Tips
- Keep the body cap on when no lens is attached; with no mechanical shutter curtain at rest, the sensor is exposed during lens changes.
- Carry a spare LP-E17 for long days and charge it with the supplied LC-E17.

Questions
Does the Canon EOS R8 have image stabilization?
Not in the body. Canon lists in-body IS as not provided. For video it offers Movie Digital IS, and for stills you get optical stabilization from RF lenses that have IS.
Does the EOS R8 shoot 4K without a crop?
Yes. Canon lists 4K UHD at up to 60p from the full sensor width, oversampled from 6K, and Full HD at up to about 180p for slow motion.
What memory card does the R8 use?
It has one SD card slot that accepts SD, SDHC and SDXC cards, including UHS-II. For high frame rate video Canon calls for fast cards, UHS Speed Class 3 and V60 or higher.
Can I use EF lenses on the EOS R8?
Yes, with Canon's Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, sold separately. RF lenses mount directly; RF-S lenses also fit and use a cropped area of the sensor.
