Foldable electric scooter: the smart, easy way to ride anywhere and store it in a closet

The 30-second version
A foldable electric scooter suits riders who carry it or store it small: up stairs, into a trunk, under a desk. Check its weight before its folded size, because you lift every pound. The folding scooters we carry weigh 31.5 to 57.1 lb and fold to about 19 to 25 inches tall. Folding changes nothing in California law: a driver’s license or permit, 15 mph at most and a helmet under 18.
- Lightest we carry 31.5 lb (Hiboy S2R Plus)
- Heaviest folding one 57.1 lb , with a seat (ECOM 14)
- Folded height (ours) 19 to 25 inches, about
- Speed on any road 15 mph at most
- Rider weight (ours) 220 or 265 lb
No garage, no parking, no patience left? A foldable electric scooter fits your life.
In one lineA foldable electric scooter folds, lifts and lives in a closet, so it never waits chained outside.
You want to ride. Your life has other plans. Third-floor apartment, no garage, a hallway the width of a yoga mat, and a car trunk already full of everything. A full-size scooter in that life means a thing chained outside, getting rained on and eyed by strangers. A foldable electric scooter flips that: fold it, lift it, stash it, done.
Fold it, lift it, stash it, done.
Meanwhile, the alternative keeps costing you. On October 16, 2026, AAA put regular gas in Orange County at $6.2012 a gallon.19 And the traffic: INRIX says Los Angeles drivers lost 87 hours each to congestion in 2025, against 49 hours for the typical American driver.20 That is two full work weeks of sitting still, plus the circling for a spot when you finally arrive.

Now picture this instead. Park a mile out where parking is easy, unfold in seconds, glide the last stretch, fold again and roll it under your desk. At home it lives in a closet and charges where you can see it. No rack, no chain, no worrying.
This guide shows you how to pick the right one: the weight you will actually lift, the folded size against your space, the latch, real range, the California rules and the bus rules in Orange County, plus the ten folding models we carry in Fullerton.

What is a foldable electric scooter, and who is it for?
In one lineIt is made for apartments, park-and-ride drivers, students and anyone short on storage.
A foldable electric scooter is a standing scooter whose stem folds down over the deck, so the whole scooter gets short enough to carry, lift into a trunk or park in a closet. People also call it a folding electric scooter or a portable electric scooter. The fold is the whole trick: it is how a scooter fits a life with stairs, a small apartment or a car.
From the counter, a foldable electric scooter is made for four kinds of rider:
- Apartment riders: a scooter that folds goes up the stairs and into the hallway instead of waiting outside. Hiboy says the S2R Plus’s foldable frame and removable battery make it easy to carry upstairs and store in an apartment.9
- Drivers who park and ride: fold it, lift it into the trunk, ride the last mile. Hiboy says the S3 folds in three steps for a car trunk, an office, an apartment or a closet.10
- Students and office riders: a folded scooter under a desk is one nobody takes from a rack. Our guide to an electric scooter for college students covers campus life.
- Riders with little storage: the folding scooters we carry stand about 19 to 25 inches tall once folded.91011121314151617
Who should look elsewhere? If the scooter will live in a garage and comfort matters more than carrying, a seated model may suit you better; our guide to an electric scooter with seat compares them. A foldable mobility scooter for seniors, with three or four wheels and a chair, is a different product: California’s motorized scooter definition starts with two wheels,1 and we do not sell mobility scooters. This guide is about two-wheeled scooters that fold.
Does a foldable electric scooter follow different rules in California?
In one lineFolding changes the size, not the rules; for the bus, OCTA’s battery rule decides, so call first.
No. Folding changes the size, not the class. Vehicle Code Section 407.5 defines a motorized scooter by its two wheels, its handlebars, its electric motor and the floorboard you stand on,1 and Section 21235 sets the rules for its rider. Here they are, all of them:2
- A valid driver’s license or instruction permit.2
- 15 mph at most, on every highway and bikeway, whatever the posted limit.2
- A fitted, fastened bicycle helmet for riders under 18.2
- No passengers, and no riding on the sidewalk except to get into or out of a property next to it.2
- A brake strong enough to skid the braked wheel on dry, level, clean pavement.2
Three more lines and you know more than most riders on the road. The DMV’s teen page says the instruction permit starts at 15½.3 Fullerton’s Ordinance 3354 bars riding in any public park; the copy we read is the city’s published draft.6 And since January 1, 2026, a motorized scooter sold in California needs a battery system tested to UL 2272.45 Under 18? Grab a fitted helmet from our helmets.

Can you take a foldable electric scooter on the bus?
The fold does not settle this; the transit agency does. In Orange County, OCTA’s Customer Conduct Policy lists lithium-ion batteries among the items not allowed on any OCTA transit vehicle or facility, and it bars operating a motorized scooter in its facilities, vehicles and parking structures.7 The folding scooters in this guide run on lithium-ion batteries.9101112131516 So before you plan a bus-and-scooter commute, call OC Bus at 714-636-RIDE and ask about your exact scooter.8 Trains and other cities’ buses write their own rules: read them before you buy a scooter for that trip.
How to choose a foldable electric scooter in 7 checks
In one lineWeight first, then folded size, the latch, rider limit, range, tires and the slow mode.
Start with where the scooter goes when you stop riding, then read the foldable electric scooter spec sheet in this order. Every number below is the maker’s own, for the folding scooters we carry.

1. The weight you will lift
Here is the number that makes or breaks it. A foldable electric scooter only helps if you can lift it as often as you need to. Hiboy lists the S2R Plus at 31.5 lb, the S3 and the S2 Nova at 34.5 lb, the S2 Pro at 37.4 lb, the S2 SE at 37.8 lb, the S2 MAX at 40 lb and the KS4 Pro at 40.6 lb.9101112131415 Above that, the MAX Pro is 51.59 lb, the X300 is 52.9 lb and the seated ECOM 14 is 57.1 lb.161718
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Hiboy S2R Plus, the lightest | 31.5lb |
| Hiboy ECOM 14, with a seat | 57.1lb |
Hiboy’s figures: the S2R Plus (source 9) and the seated ECOM 14 (source 18) Source9
Our counter test, and it never lies: lift the scooter to the height of your trunk floor and hold it for ten seconds. If that is hard in the store, it will be harder on your stairs at the end of a long day.
2. The folded size against your space
Go deeperEvery folded size, in inches
Measure the trunk, the closet or the spot under your desk first, then compare the folded size on the spec sheet. Folded, the S2R Plus measures 44.09 x 16.92 x 18.90 inches, the S3 43.5 x 16.7 x 18.7 inches, the S2 Nova 43.6 x 18.1 x 19 inches and the S2 Pro 45.3 x 16.5 x 19.3 inches.9101112 The S2 SE folds to 46.1 x 16.5 x 20.1 inches, and the S2 MAX and the KS4 Pro to about 21 inches tall.131415 The MAX Pro folds to 47.24 x 20.87 x 23.62 inches.16
Length is the number everybody forgets: a foldable electric scooter is still about 44 to 47 inches long when folded, so check the depth of your trunk, not only its height.
3. The latch, and how fast it folds
The fold is a joint you will open and close every single day, so try it in the store. Hiboy says the S2 SE and the S2 MAX fold in about 3 seconds, the S3 folds in three steps, and the MAX Pro’s one-step fold collapses it in under a minute.13141016 Check three things before you choose: the latch closes with a clear click, the stem does not move once you ride, and the folded stem stays put while you carry it.
At the counter
Three checks on the fold: the latch closes with a clear click, the stem does not move once you ride, and the folded stem stays put while you carry it.
4. Rider weight limit
Count yourself and your backpack. Most of the folding scooters we carry are rated for riders up to 220 lb; the MAX Pro and the X300 are rated for 265 lb.91011121314151617 Hiboy notes that staying within the weight limit keeps performance, range and braking where they should be.10
5. Range against weight
Range costs weight: a bigger battery makes a heavier scooter. The maker’s figures run from 17 miles on the S3 and the S2 SE, 20 on the S2 Nova, 22 on the S2R Plus and 25 on the S2 Pro and the KS4 Pro, up to 37.3 miles on the X300, 40 on the S2 MAX and 46.6 on the MAX Pro.91011121314151617
Our counter rule is to plan on about two thirds of the maker’s number, since hills, cold mornings and a heavier rider all draw more power. So the smart move is simple: choose the lightest foldable electric scooter whose two thirds still cover your round trip. Check yours in ten seconds:
Try it · Trip check
Will this scooter make my round trip?
00
Pick an answer above.
Makers’ range figures · our two-thirds counter rule
6. Tires: air, solid or honeycomb
On a small foldable electric scooter, the tires decide how the ride feels. The S2R Plus rolls on 9-inch air-filled tires; the S3 and the S2 Nova pair a solid front tire with an air-filled rear on 8.5-inch wheels; the S2 Pro and the KS4 Pro use 10-inch honeycomb tires; the S2 MAX and the MAX Pro use self-healing tires; the X300 has 12-inch air-filled tires.910111214151617
The trade in one breath: air-filled tires ride softer and can go flat. Solid and honeycomb tires do not go flat but pass more of the road to your hands. Bigger wheels roll over cracks more easily, and they add weight.
7. Speed modes, brakes and the battery
Every folding scooter here can go faster than 15 mph, so find the mode you will use on public roads. Hiboy gives the S2R Plus a Drive mode up to 13 mph and the X300 an energy-saving mode up to 13 mph.917 On any other model, ask us to show you the slow setting before you leave.
Go deeperBrakes, removable batteries and the UL 2272 line
Brakes differ from one foldable electric scooter to the next: the S2R Plus pairs electronic braking with a disc brake, the S3 has a rear drum brake, and the S2 SE pairs electronic braking with a drum brake.91013 A removable battery is a gift when the scooter lives in a garage but charges inside: Hiboy says the S2R Plus and the X300 have one.917 And look for the UL 2272 line on the battery, which California asks for on scooters sold since January 1, 2026; Hiboy says the KS4 Pro’s battery carries it.415

- Hiboy KS4 Pro, 40.6 lb: a 500 W motor with 750 W peak, a UL 2272 battery and 25 miles.15
Fits you if you carry it a few steps and ride farther. See the Hiboy S2 Pro, the Hiboy S2 SE, the Hiboy S2 MAX and the Hiboy KS4 Pro.
Over 50 lb: folds for the trunk, rides like a bigger scooter
- Hiboy MAX Pro, 51.59 lb: riders up to 265 lb, 11-inch self-healing tires, dual suspension and 46.6 miles.16
- Hiboy X300, 52.9 lb: riders up to 265 lb, 12-inch air-filled tires, front suspension, turn signals, a quick-release battery and 37.3 miles.17
These fold to fit a trunk or a garage corner, but at over 50 lb each is a foldable electric scooter you roll more than carry. See the Hiboy MAX Pro and the Hiboy X300.
With a seat: the ECOM 14
Hiboy lists the ECOM 14 with a foldable frame, a removable seat, a removable basket and a weight of 57.1 lb.18 It is the folding choice if you want to sit. See the Hiboy ECOM 14.
All ten, side by side with our seated scooters, are on our electric scooters page, and the Folding style there shows only the ones that fold.
Is a foldable electric scooter worth it?
In one lineWorth it when its weight matches how often you carry it; lighter usually means less range.
For most riders without a garage, yes, and it is not close, as long as its weight matches how often you will carry it. Here is the straight trade, from the counter:
- What you gain: a scooter that lives inside, so it charges where you can see it and never waits on the street; a trunk-sized ride for the last mile; a short stair carry instead of a long walk.
- What you give up: a lighter scooter usually means a smaller battery and smaller wheels, so less range and a firmer ride than a big scooter. The lightest ones we carry list 17 to 22 miles.91011
- What it does not change: the rules. A foldable electric scooter rides under the same license, 15 mph and helmet rules as any motorized scooter.2
The trade
17
to 22 miles: the maker’s range on the three lightest folding scooters we carry. A lighter scooter usually means a smaller battery.91011
If you will rarely carry it, weight matters less and range and comfort matter more; our electric scooter for adults buying guide walks through that choice.
How do you fold, carry and care for one?
In one lineFold it switched off, check the latch every week, and charge it inside where you can see it.
These habits come from the store, not from a maker or a law, and they keep a foldable electric scooter folding smooth for years:
Switch it off
Flat ground, kickstand down.
Fold until the latch clicks
A clear click, and a stem that stays put.
Carry it close
Folded stem in hand, deck down, wheels away from your legs.
Charge it inside
The maker’s charger, where you can see it; never in a hot trunk.
Check the latch every week
A stem that clicks, wobbles or opens too easily needs a look.
- Fold it switched off, on flat ground, with the kickstand down.
- Check the latch every week. A stem that clicks, wobbles or opens too easily needs a look before the next ride.
- Carry it close. Hold the folded stem with the deck down and the wheels away from your legs.
- Charge it inside, with the maker’s charger, where you can see it; unplug it once it is full, and never charge it in a hot trunk.
- Mind the rain. Hiboy rates the S2R Plus, the S2 Pro and the S2 SE IPX4, with the S2R Plus’s removable battery at IPX5: light rain and splashes, never deep water.91213
- Plan for wear. Tires, brakes and the folding joint wear first, so check them often and keep the maker’s manual handy.

Is there a foldable electric scooter with a seat?
Yes. Hiboy lists the ECOM 14, a foldable electric scooter with a seat you can take off.18 Hiboy also sells an optional seat for the KS4 Pro, sold separately.15 Our electric scooter with seat guide compares the seated models.
Is a foldable electric scooter good for seniors?
It depends on balance and strength more than age: a standing scooter asks you to stand, steer and brake at the same time, and to lift it when you fold it.
